Johnny as ‘King of the Vampires’ in Nancy Kerrigan’s Halloween on Ice, which opened last night in Wilkes-Barre, PA, to an enthusiastic crowd. The 15-city tour runs throughout October; get your tickets here! Photo via Halloween on Ice.
Yes, our first look! Or more accurately: First Glimpse. First Peek. First Peep Through a Tiny Eyehole That Leaves Us Gasping and Begging For More… aaaand let’s stop there before things get weird. But seriously, how is there such a dearth of pro photos and videos from the stellar opening night of one of the few remaining skating tours in the US, a tour which is chockfull of outstanding skaters plus amazing costumes, props, an actual storyline, etc.?? As one fan notes with breathless excitment: “The show was amazing it was non stop entertainment from start to finish!!!!” Yet I’ve spent the overnight hours forlornly refreshing Getty Images et al, only to be told each time, “Nope.”
Fortunately fans have come to our rescue to at least provide the aforementioned glimpse, and we cling to hope that a cascade of photos and videos will be forthcoming soon from the early tour stops. Very special thanks go to Jen Warfield, who has kindly shared her photos and video clips from opening night below!
First, a brief synopsis of the production: according to a preshow interview with Halloween on Ice producer Jerry Solomon:
“The show basically centers around a dream sequence in which the characters come to life and try to convince the main character (Nancy) to join them in their Halloween world. Eventually, the main character meets the king of the vampires, played by Johnny Weir, who puts a spell on her.”
And from an interview with Nancy Kerrigan:
“I’m a princess, and I’ll be transformed in the second act into something a little more dark,” [Kerrigan] said, hinting that vampires might be involved in the transition.
“It’s great, and we’ve got a fantastic cast,” she said. “Johnny Weir is so funny, and he’s my counterpart for most of the show.”
Three-time U.S. Champion and two-time Olympian Weir is a great addition to the show, Kerrigan said.
“You put a costume on him, and he becomes that character,” she said.
[BTW Nancy also casually noted in this same interview that “this year we’re also doing a behind-the-scenes show for Nickelodeon.” Which is scheduled to be broadcast on Wednesday, October 21, per Nick Sports TV’s Instagram! Set those DVRs!]
Johnny skates two solos in the show and has two different costumes, as you’ll see below. He’s also featured in several group numbers. And according to opening-night attendee Trish Aaron-Misiura, who accompanied Jen: “The last skate Johnny does is worth every penny of [the ticket]. It is amazing and beautiful.”
So we begin backstage with the best pic of opening night, which came from Johnny himself, in his first costume. To which “WOW” and “AMAZING” seem woefully inadequate responses, though they’re the ones most of us relied on when we saw the photo:
