Beautiful Johnny holds two armloads of enormous bouquets from his beloved Pandas after arriving in Beijing Tuesday for this weekend’s Amazing on Ice show. Photo via Weibo, of course. More gorgeous pics below!
Yes, it’s that time of year again, when Johnny is in China and fandom turns to Weibo, the indescribably wonderful and massive Chinese social media site that floods our world with priceless photos and videos while he’s there. This year the Artistry on Ice tour has rebranded itself as “Amazing on Ice” and features one incredible performance only rather than a series of tour stops. The show is this Friday, July 15, in Beijing, 7 pm local time / 7 am ET (please let there be a livestream). So our Weibogeddon this year is compressed into just four or five days of intensely outstanding coverage, and we begin with Johnny’s arrival Tuesday afternoon in Beijing.
Quick reminder: Johnny guest stars on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars this coming Monday, July 18, 8 pm ET — don’t miss it! More info at the end of the post.
CHINA. Day 1: Arrival.
During the endless wait for his flight, my dear Panda friend Haohewuyin, who goes by the nickname “Number,” posted photos of the bouquets fans had brought to the airport with the caption, “Come on baby!”
FINALLY. He’s here!!
And of course one of the first photos posted is of his shoes.
Suitcases are set aside for the moment as he is plied with flowers.
You don’t really have a sense of how big these bouquets are until you see him drowning in them . . .
With my dear friend and star photographer Joveta Leo, who has contributed greatly to previous Weibocalypses.
Johnny posted thanks to his Pandas on his Instagram . . .

CHINA. Day 2: Rehearsals.
Johnny and his wonderful AOI partner from 2014, Zhang Hao, are reunited and killing the throw jump in rehearsal.

And also we have the gloriousness that is Johnny & Stéphane / Roxy & Velma / Will & Betty (their names on Weibo via Google [mis]translate) in rehearsal photos . . .
. . . and video.
Let’s tango @johnnygweir!! by @slambiel
With Maxim Trankov. Instagrammed by Johnny with the caption: “Grapefruits. Rehearsal day 1. @xam_trankov 📸: AmazingOnIce.” There is an ongoing (as in several year’s worth) running joke among certain AOI cast members about grapefruits, but it is left to our imaginations to ponder the meaning . . .
Doing interviews for Chinese media. Amazing on Ice says that Johnny was asked during his interviews which athletes he most admired. His answer: Evgeni Plushenko, David Beckham, and Maria Sharapova. [Side note: additional wonderful interview here. Use Google Translate to (kind of) get the gist.]
The interviewers also mentioned that many people think he and Tom Hiddleston look very much alike. He said that if he ever had the chance to meet a god, he’d like it to be Loki.
And one more video from rehearsal. #eeeeeeeeek
